In American politics, it can be argued that "conservatives" formed the basis of the Democratic-Republicans in the early days of the Republic, as it advocated for decentralized government and more emphasis on personal liberty. They would shift to become the Democratic Party by the eve of the Civil War, but allegiances would shift again by the time of the New Deal to the Republican Party as the home of American Conservatism.
