Europeans desired to find a new route to Asia instead of obtaining goods from merchants in the middle east because of two reasons. The first reason is money-saving; if goods were obtained directly from the source, they would cost less. Second, They would not be reliant on the whims and prices of a second party, thereby eliminating a monopoly on middle eastern goods.
