Answer:

Answers below!

Step-by-step explanation:

  1. The woman, Tessie, is stoned to death by the village as she shouts that the lottery "isn't fair".
  2. The word "lottery" has positive connotations, leading the reader to believe that winning the lottery would be cause for celebration. Alas, it is quite the opposite.
  3. The author misleads the reader with this title in order to shock them with the twist at the end. Tension is built throughout the beginning of the story as the people gather around to see whose paper will be the one with the black mark, which gives the reader time to get to know the characters. As the story unfolds, the tone and mood of the writing gets increasingly morbid, leading the reader to wonder what the title really means, what the lottery really is. This tension is released by the event at the end of the story, finally showing the true nature of "The Lottery".
