Explanation:

Because there is a $9,000 gap in between salaries and James's raise is 500 dollars higher than tommy so just work out how 9000÷500 (we are trying to work out how many 500s it will take to cover the $9,000 gap) then that's your answer just turn that number into years (eg. 12 = 12 years) the fact that the salaries increase doesn't matter cause we are working out the difference in raises (sorry if this sounds like gibberish)
