Nitrogen fixation is important to life because fixed inorganic compounds are essential for the biosynthesis of the nitrogen containing compounds.

Some plants such as legumes have collaborating relationship with the diazotrophic bacteria which fix atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia. These bacteria contain nitrogenase enzyme whici is responsible for biological nitrogen fixation. The reaction for the nitrogen fixation is as follows
