We can see a ring of light around called the ph0ton ring. This ring of light is visible because even light cannot escape a black hol3. While the light is being suck3d in the light rays are bent. Black hol3s also squ3eze the surrounding matter into a disk of glowing gas. If the photon ring is not visible the black hole can still be seen because any light from nearby stars will be absorbed. Therefor3, where the black hole is much darker than the rest of space.
