Answer is
small number = 25
Large number = 29

Step by step

We will call the larger number “x”
We will call the smaller number “x - 4”

We know the sum (add) of the larger (x) and 3 times the smaller 3(x - 4) = 104

So our equation is

x + 3(x - 4) = 104

Distribute

x + 3x - 12 = 104

Combine

4x - 12 = 104

Add 12 to both sides to isolate x

4x -12 +12 = 104 + 12

4x = 116

Divide both sides by 4 to solve

4/4 x = 116/4

X = 29
So our larger number is 29

We can substitute 29 for x in the smaller number equation to find the smaller number

x - 4
29 - 4 = 25
The smaller number is 25

Now we check our work using the original equation

x + 3(x - 4) = 104

29 + 3(29 - 4) = 104

29 + 75 = 104

104 = 104
It equals so it is correct
