Multiply equation [1] by 2 both sides we get;

Using distributive property i,e
a \cdot(b+c) = a\cdot b+ a\cdot c

4x + 6y = 24 .....[3]

Subtract equation [2] from [3] to eliminate x we get;

4x + 6y - 4x - 2y= 24 - 10

Combine like terms;

4y = 14

Divide both sides by 4 we get;

y = 3.5

Substitute the value of y in equation [1] we have;

2x + 3(3.5) =12

2x + 10.5 = 12

or

2x = 12 -10.5

2x = 1.5

Divide both sides by 2 we get;
