In 1871, Meiji abolished the hierarchy established by the shoguns. Thus, the samurai, forced from father to son to obey their master, the daimyo, following a strict code of honor, put themselves at the service of the emperor. The old fiefs were extinguished and personal privileges were eliminated through an agrarian reform and the reformulation of rural land tax legislation.
