Answer: ATP and sugars

Step-by-step explanation:

Photosynthesis is a unique metabolic process carried out by certain cells of those autotrophic organisms capable of producing their own organic matter with inorganic substances by using the energy provided by sunlight.

Photosynthesis is, then, the process plants use to produce their food. In addition to using it for food, plants and trees use it to grow and develop. The main substance needed for photosynthesis is chlorophyll, the green substance found in all leaves.

Photosynthesis is usually divided into two stages.

  • The first stage refers to light-dependent and temperature-independent reactions.
  • In the second stage, however, the reactions are temperature-dependent and independent of light, or dark reactions.

Light-dependent reactions use light energy to form two molecules necessary for the next stage of photosynthesis: the energy storage molecule ATP and the reduced electron carrier NADPH.

The dark phase of photosynthesis is a set of reactions independent of light, which can occur both during the day and at night, that convert carbon dioxide and other compounds into glucose. These reactions, unlike light reactions, do not require light to occur. These reactions take the products of the light phase (mainly ATP and NADPH) and perform further chemical processes on them. There are two dark reactions: carbon fixation and the Calvin cycle.

In plants, carbon dioxide CO2 enters the interior of the leaves through pores called stomas and diffuses into the chloroplast stroma, the site where Calvin's cycle reactions occur and where the sugar is synthesized. In the Calvin cycle, the carbon atoms of the CO2 (incorporated into organic molecules) and used to form three-carbon sugars and this process is called carbon fixation. This process is stimulated by and depends on ATP and NADPH from light reactions.

So, since a herbicide is a plant protection product used to kill plants, they wont be able to perform photosynthesis henceforth they wont be able to produce ATP and sugars.
