Step 1: Read the Week 3 Discussion Overview Below

You are a working as an allied health care professional, and one of your patients has just received the diagnosis of a serious illness. As the patient is leaving the office, you overhear a conversation between the patient and her son. The son starts to open the door for his mother, but she lashes out and says “You treat me like I can’t do anything right! Just leave me alone!” She storms out and leaves her son standing in the doorway.

Step 2: Create a New Thread for Your Initial Post by Wednesday at 11:59pm EST

Respond to the following prompts in your initial post:

Would you assume that this behavior is typical for the mother, or that it might be influenced by the emotional effects of the illness (as described in your book)? Explain.
Think of a time when you or a family member or friend experienced illness—what emotional effects of illness did you observe?
As an allied health care provider, how would you respond to the mother if she made those comments to you, rather than to her son?
