In the early years of the American republic (before the 19th century), party nominees were chosen by delegates in the party's national convention.

The answer is false, there were no thing called party's national convention, instead of that, they had a presidential nominating convention held every four year where delegates gave a nominee by votes. On that convention delegates also voted for other interest of the party, such as shift on old charges to new ones, etc.
