Which is the best advice for a friend who says she has been taking non-prescription cold medicine to help her fall asleep at night? Tell her to stop because it is a form of drug abuse. Tell her that drug misuse is not as bad as drug abuse. Tell her it’s alright because the drug is non-prescription. Tell her to be careful not to take too much.

Tell the friend to be careful not to take too much. It does not sound like they have a negative relationship with this drug, nor serious health issues. Telling them to be cautious is the most helpful/appropriate thing to say here.
