The Constitution as originally written contained no guarantee of religious liberty. Despite his position as a slaveholder, Charles Pinckney, delegate to the Constitutional Convention from South Carolina, was responsible for the end of Article VI of the U.S. Constitution, which states that elected officials and judges wouldn´t be required any religious Test as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust.
