Answer:B.foreshadowing of when he will escape to freedom

Explanation: Frederick Douglas ( 1818-1895) was an important fighter for human rights. He was a slave himself. He became an abolitionist and was part of the movement to free slaves. In this excerpt , he is making the reader know in advance -foreshadow- that he will run away. Although he did not rely too much on the white men's advice, he finally followed it and escaped.

He wanted to simply state what happened, so the answer is C. The book is a memoir so much of the book is him simply retelling his life without many opportunities of using plot devices like forshadowing.
