Why does the E.T.S. need oxygen whereas Glycolysis does not?

Glycolysis. ... Although glycolysis doesn't require oxygen, the fate of the pyruvate molecules depends on whether oxygen is present. If oxygen isn't available, the pyruvate is converted to lactate, and no additional ATP is produced from this conversion.
