You are trying to push a 97-kg crate across a level floor. The coefficent of static fricton between the crate and the floor is 0.25 and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.17. What is the maximum horizontal force you can apply to the crate before it starts moving?

To start the motion of the box we need to apply a force that is just more than the force of limiting friction

here we can say

formula of limiting friction will be given as

F_f = \mu_s * F_n

here we know that

F_n = mg

now by the above equation we will have

F_f = \mu_s * mg

Given that

\mu_s = 0.25

\mu_k = 0.17

m = 97 kg

now by above formula

F = 0.25 * 97 * 9.8 = 237.65

so maximum force applied on the crate to move it will be 237.65 N
