Suppose a group of x people rent a jeep for $80 for a trip to the beach and plan to share the cost equally. If one person in the group decides not to go, each remaining person has to pay an extra $4. Which equation could be used to determine how many people are in the group?

Given that a group of x people rent a jeep for 80 dollars.

Since they share the amount equally we have

each person share =
(80)/(x)

When one person in the group decides not to go, each remaining person has to pay an extra 4 dollars.

i.e. now the share borne by each in the group would be


(80)/(x-1)

This is 4 dollars more than the original

Hence equation would be


(80)/(x-1)-(80)/(x) =4

This equation would be used to determine how many people are in the group.
