p.m.
Also leaving at 1:00 p.m., her brother Paul leaves her house and drives south to a state
park. He arrives at 3:00 p.m. The driving distance from the beach to the state park is 286

Answer:

52 mph

Explanation:

Distance = rate x time. We know the distance and we know the time. We are looking for the rate.

The rate and time of Laney + the rate and time of Paul gives us the total distance of 26.

(7)/(2) x + 2x = 286 (3
(1)/(2) is the same as
(7)/(2))

(11)/(2) x = 286 (3 1/2 + 2 = 5 1/2 or
(11)/(2)) Multiply both sides by
(2)/(11)

(
(2)/(11))
(11)/(2) x = 286
((2)/(11))

x =
(572)/(11)

x = 52
