In contrast to energy flow which is unidirectional in nature, matter is always recycled and move in a continuous cyclic manner.

The matter is recycled within as well as between the ecosystems with the help of biogeochemical cycles such as carbon cycle, sulfur cycle, water cycle etc.

The cyclic movement of matter is essential for the maintenance of life on Earth.

Law of conservation of mass also states that matter can neither be created no it can be destroyed. It can change from one form to another. Hence, matter changes its form and moves in continuous cyclic manner in the biosphere.
