Liam is a tyre fitter. it takes him 56 minutes to fit 4 tyres to a van.

a) how long would it take him to fit 12 tyres to 3 vans?

b) if he works for 42 minutes, how many tyres can he fit?

I would first solve how long it takes for 1 tyres to make life easier. Just solve 56 divided by 4, which means that Liam takes 14 minutes to put one tyres into the van. For part a, I don't quite understand the 3 vans part, but you know he 's putting 12 tyres into a van, so multiply 12 by 14 to get 156. Part B gives you time instead of tyres. Solve it practically the same... 42 divided 14 is 3, so he fits 3 tyres in 42 minutes,

Answer:

Part a)
168\ minutes or
2\ hours\ 48\ minutes

Part b)
3\ tyres

Explanation:

Part a) Using a proportion

(56)/(4)(minutes)/(tyres)=(x)/(12)(minutes)/(tyres) \\ \\x=12*56/4\\ \\x=168\ minutes

168\ minutes=2.8\ hours=2\ hours\ 48\ minutes

Part b) Using a proportion

(56)/(4)(minutes)/(tyres)=(42)/(x)(minutes)/(tyres)\\ \\x=4*42/56\\ \\x=3\ tyres
