The answer is; asexual reproduction


This involves the splitting of the mother cell into two identical daughter cells, genetically. There is no variation between the mother and offspring as it would occur in sexual reproduction. The only variation is brought about by mutations.

However, occasionally, these bacteria reproduce sexually by conjugation. In such cases the genetic material of one bacteria - ‘the male’ - is transferred to the ‘ female’ bacteria through an appendage called pill.
