Sharecropping.

This phenomena limited the ability for ex-slaves to move up in the social standing. By having to essentially "rent" the land they worked on, as well as give back a large portion of their crops to the land owner, the ex-slaves were unable to surmount a surplus of money or food. This kept them from achieving upward mobility.
