A quotient is the result of a division. If you divide a number by another number, the result is the quotient. For example, if you divide 8 by 2, you get 4. 4 is the quotient of the division of 8 by 2. If you divide 3 by 7, the quotient is 3/7 since 3/7 is the result of the division of 3 by 7. If you do a division, and you end up with a fully reduced fraction whose numerator is greater than the denominator, then you can write the quotient as a mixed numeral. For example, what is 20 divided by 3? The quotient is the fraction 20/3. The numerator, 20, is greater than the denominator, 3, so you can write the fraction 20/3 as a mixed numeral. To do so, do long division. 20 divided by 3 is 6 with a remainder of 2. Then 20/2 = 6 2/3 as a mixed numeral.
