3-6+5 is equal to 2, as opposed to 3-5+6 which is 4. The commutative property is only applicable to positive numbers, in this case, Jerome could have done 5-6+3, which would still equal to 2.

The sign is part of the number.

The first term is +3, the second term is -6, and the third term is +5

In order to use the commutative property so that the -6 and +5 are switched, it would be rewritten as: 3 + 5 - 6

Answer: Jerome did not include the sign with the number when he used the commutative property.
