Answer:

  • War among city-states weakened defenses against foreign threats.
  • Corruption and devotion to selfish interests eroded democratic rule.

The Peloponnese War was a military conflict between the city-states of Athens and Sparta. It took place between 431 BC and 404 BC This war was reported in detail by two ancient Greek historians, Xenophon and Thucydides.

The Peloponnese War ended in April 404 BC after the surrender of Athens and the Spartan conquest at Helesponto. The Spartans supported an oligarchic coup in Athens, toppling the democratic system and implementing an authoritarian system of government known as the Thirty Tyranny.

The end of the war overthrew the power of Athens on the peninsula and resulted in Sparta's political hegemony and economy in the region, with its system aimed at military strengthening. In addition, the war between city states weakened defenses against foreign threats; and corruption and devotion to selfish interests eroded democratic government.
