Well, they were slaves. And so they were torn apart often times not able to see each other again. And some black people fought in the war, some for the Confederate's and some for the Union. And just because they fought, didn't mean they were treated equal. They were put in segregated hospitals when they were injured, and they often times had the worst jobs, ones that white people didn't want to do.
