Reformers were shocked by President Andrew Johnson's quick reconstruction of ex-Confederate states because his reconstruction plan seemed to contradict his earlier proclamations whereby he had stated a readiness to destroy the southern planter aristocracy. Nevertheless, his impeachment trial ended his interference with reconstruction
