In what way were the expansions of empires motivated by the politics among european nations?

Leaders wanted as much territory as possible for their empires which led to things like the imaginary line of demarcation. They were motivated with the glory and wealth that came from having big empires. This is because large empires facilitated trade and collection of more taxes
