The nucleus of an atom is made up of at least one proton (hydrogen has only one proton in its nucleus) though most have both protons and neutrons. The nucleus is positively charged. This positively charged nucleus creates an electromagnetic force that attracts an holds electrons in orbit around the nucleus.
