x − y = −3
x + 3y = 5

So for this, we will be using elimination method. With these two equations, subtract (x - y = -3) from (x + 3y = 5) to get
4y=8 . From here we can solve for y.

For this, just divide both sides by 4, and your answer will be
y=2

Now that we have the value of y, substitute it in into either equation to solve for x:


x-2=-3\\ x=-1\\ \\ x+3*2=5\\ x+6=5\\ x=-1

In short, x = -1.
