I think that the Europeans labeled North America as the New World because it was brand-new to them. The European explorers of the time had had no prior contact with North Americans. The Vikings did have settlements years before, but they had all dissolved, so the “discovery” of North America was quite the paradigm shift, almost like being introduced to people from a completely different planet.
