So here we have Edward, working to get some Beats by Dre!
The numbers they give us can definitely be used to figure out how much he had before spending $43 on cleaning supplies.
Since we know that AFTER spending $43 on cleaning supplies he has $198, we will ADD $43 to $198.
198
+ 43
= 241.
After doing the math, we find out that he had $241 to start out with.
Now; to make an equation!
leftover + supplies = total.
The amount he had after spending money on supplies plus the amount he had already spent on supplies equals the total amount he made from washing cars — in this case, $241.
Let’s take another similar scenario!
Edward is washing cars and, after spending $75 on supplies, has $175 left over to buy his Beats.
We’ll go back to that equation we used earlier (leftover + supplies = total).
leftover ($175) + supplies ($75) = total ($250).
See? Using that equation and the numbers I gave, we calculated how much money he made overall.
