Opposite sides are equal so set up the equations 6=2x+y and 18=5x+4y. This is called a system of equations and can be solved by substitution. Solve for y in 6=2x+y. This becomes 6-2x=y. Substitute this equation into the other one to solve. 18=5x+(-2x+6). Now solve for x which will equal to 4. Now substitute x=4 to either equation to find y. 6=2(4) +y will give you y=-2.

x=2 and y=2

2x or 2x2=4 + y or (2) = 6 which is what you would need to equal the parallel side of 6.

y=2 because 5 times x = 5 times 2 which equals 10.

4 times y = 4 times 2 which equals 8 and 10 + 8 = 18 which is what the parallel side of 18 would be .
