a=b+1
a=2b+9

b+1=2b+9
-b from both sides
1=b+9
-9 from both sides
-8=b

b+1
-8+1
-7

You can check your answer...
2b+9
2(-8)+9
-16+9
-7

The smaller is -8 and the larger is -7
