Use similar triangles to solve this. 3 is to 36 as 5 is to x. Setting that up as a proportion gives us
(3)/(36)= (5)/(x). Cross-multiply to get 3x=180. That means that the length of the ladder has to be 60 feet long to be safe.

Hello!

You can make a proportion

(3)/(5) = (36)/(x)

Cross multiply

36 × 5 = 180

Divide by 3

180 ÷ 3 = 60

\framebox {60 feet}
