Dante is driving 638 miles to his cousin's house. his car has a 12- gallon tank and goes 22 miles for every gallon of gasoline. Dante started with full tank of gasoline and will fill up the tank when empty. how many times will he have to stop for gasoline

Each tank goes for


12 \textrm{ gallons} * \frac{22 \textrm{ miles}}{\textrm{gallon}} = 264 \textrm{ miles}

How many times he'll have to stop will be related to


\frac{638 \textrm{ miles}}{264 \textrm{ miles per tank}} = (29)/(12) = 2 \frac 5{12} \textrm{ tanks}

He started with a full tank so that means he'll have to fill up twice, once after 264 miles, once after twice that, 528 miles.
