here are five ways
Here is full information
1. Research is good for the economy
Successful businesses thrive due to research and development. Almost every big industry you can think of does research to innovate their companies. Additionally, federally funded research helps the economy grow because it opens up job opportunities. You can benefit, too - if you and the right creative minds get together, an idea can become lucrative if the funding is there to help you pursue it.
2. The founders of Google graduated from federally funded PhD programs
I feel like I don't need to explain this. However, I will for the sake of argument. These people, namely, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, were supported by the National Science Foundation to get their education. This certainly contributed to their success in making the world's largest search engine. Page and Brin are great examples of federally funded education paying off. Who knows how different modern life would be if they didn't have the opportunity to work on their idea?
3. Research has always had a benefit to society, otherwise it wouldn't be funded in the first place
Research grants aren't just handed out like candy. Scientists asking for these grants have to prove that the research they wish to conduct is actually worth paying for and will ameliorate society in some way. Sally can't ask the government for $13M just to turn a penny silver. The National Science Foundation only accepts about 27.5% of the proposals they receive each year. If you want better healthcare, technology or just a more advanced society, support government research funding!
4. Climate Change is real
Whether you like it or not, it is. We need scientists to research solutions to this problem so that our future relatives can live without the fear of having to adapt to a dying planet. There isn't necessarily money to be made in fighting climate change, and that is why we need organizations like the EPA to do so.
5. Death due to cancer has declined because of research
Cancer research is the main focus of many science majors today and without government fellowships and grants, cancer treatment wouldn't be nearly as advanced as it is today. Additionally, some cancer foundations are making a profit off of donations, but if we continue to use federal funds for cancer research then we may find a cure sooner than a for-profit organization would, and the money may be used more responsibly.
