Why is newborn screening for metabolic disorders done on blood?

Newborn screening is done by a heel stick test within two days of birth, collecting a few drops of blood on a filter paper and sends it to a lab. The test is used to check for a deadly metabolic disease known as Phenylketonuria (Or PKU). Blood is the preferred method for this test
