The following system of equations can be used to find the roots of the equation

x3 + 72 = 5x2 + 18x.

y = x3 + 72
y = 5x2 + 18x

Graph this system of equations on the graphing calculator.

How many intersection points can you see in the default viewing window?

Answer:

1. 1 6 -4 3

2. y = 2x3 + 4x2 – x + 5 and y = –3x2 + 4x + 9

roots -- x=-4, x= -1/2 , x= 1

3. -2 and 0

1.27

4.73

4. 3 inch

5. If you plot a few non-x-intercept points and then draw a curvy line through them,you will not know if you got the x-intercepts even close to being correct. The only way you can be sure of your x-intercepts is to set the quadratic equal to zero and solve. So its a matter of guessing from the pictures. Basicaly said, the calculator won't give you the exact result.

6.Graphing the related system means that you do not have to rewrite the equation to set it equal to 0. It is easier because you can just graph each side of the equation.

Sometimes it is difficult to locate the intersection point for the system. You might have to zoom in a lot or figure out how to resize the window. Using the related function lets you focus on the x-axis to find the points.

7.Y=1/2x^2 and y=64

1) -11.3 or 11.3

2) 11.3
