In a group of 60 students, 12 students take algebra 1, 18 students take algebra 2, and 8 students take both subjects. How many students don't take either of these subjects?

Answer: 38

Explanation:

First create a 2 circle venn diagram. Then insert what both subjects have in common- 8 students. From there calculate how many students are in algebra 1 and 2 while acknowledging the 8 students shared. Thus algebra 1 will contain 4 students in its circle because 8+4=12 and algebra 2 will contain 10 students because 8+10=18. Your final steps would be to add the values in the venn diagram- 4+8+10=22 and subtract that sum by the "sample space"/ total students to get 38. :)
