Nixon tended toward the center on liberal and conservative issues
He was therefore favored as a neutralizing bait to the powerful liberal voices in the country which had developed during the liberal years of Roosevelt and Truman. This was in cognizant to the fact that the democrats were dominating the country's arms of government, notably congress, and had managed the executive for two decade. winning such an election against such an establishment was an uphill task that the two had to surmount with a bait of balance of ideology.

Nixon had a strong anti-Communist image

Mr. Nixon begun his political career as an ardent anti-Communist. He was hostile towards socialists and communists who he regarded as archenemies. He entered politics largely by branding his opponent for a House seat as an ally of Communists.
