Why is carbon so special compared to other elements?

Because carbon is the base of living things. Consider the word "carbohydrates." The prefix carbo- is equal to carbon. Most things are bonded to carbon.

carbon is the only element that can form so many different compounds. it can bond with another carbon atom one or two times to make double or triple covalent bonds between two carbon atoms
