No mans land was the land between trenches during WWII.

It was difficult to cross into no land land as those in the trenches would shoot at anyone with machine guns that dared to attempt to. It gained the name no mans land as no man could conquer the land in a sense.

These areas drew the length of the war out as enemies rarely gained any land and at a slow pace.
