Read the excerpt from “Speaking Arabic.”

At a neighborhood fair in Texas, somewhere between the German Oom-pah Sausage Stand and the Mexican Gorditas booth, I overheard a young man say to his friend, “I wish I had a heritage. Sometimes I feel—so lonely for one.” And the tall American trees were dangling their thick branches right down over his head.

In this excerpt, the author reveals the narrator’s view on heritage by

1. describing the memory of a family member.
2. describing a conversation with someone else.
3. presenting dialogue that includes a similar perspective.
4. presenting dialogue that includes a contrasting perspective

I haven't read the story, but it appears there is irony at the end to suggest the author does not agree with what the man said.

The correct answer is D.

In this excerpt from "Speaking Arabic", the author reveals the narrator's view on heritage by presenting dialogue that includes a contrasting perspective .

Firstly, the narrator describes the fair, in which stands from different countries, like Germany and Mexico can be found. This represents how heritage can exists even when one is not in his home country.

And on the other hand, the narrator presents an American boy, who, even when living in his own country, feels lonely because he has "no heritage".
