we adopted the Island hopping strategy because of the distance between the US and japan we needed military bases along the way to stop and re supply. by island hopping we were not only able to win key victories against the Japanese by taking key military installations that over time really weakened the Japanese in their air power.

The island hopping strategy was instead of attacking Japan mainland directly, US forces attached and took over islands around it. The objective was to starve them to surrender. It was a slow process because it required heavy navy shelling from offshore and then marines going up the island to capture it.
