In community medicine, the condition of lacking basic human needs for survival such as water, food, shelter, etc. is called poverty. Poverty is an important determinant of healthcare especially in third world countries such that the lack of basic needs leads to diseases such as dehydration and protein malnutrition leading to decreased immune response to infection (wherein the patient is also predisposed because of lack of shelter) and ultimately leading to sepsis and death.
