Why do many indigenous people in Guatemala live in the mountains

I believe the answer is: because it is the only land available to them

In the past, the vast majority of the Guatemalan territory was controlled by the Spanish empire following their expansion in American continent.
Since the empire took ownership of the lands that they previously used, the indigenous people had no choice but to move and live in mountain territory.
