I assume you meant x + 6 as a numerator and x - 8 as a numerator although that is not what the equation you wrote means.

(x + 6)/(2) - (x - 8)/(3) = 5

(x + 6)/(2) * (3)/(3) - (x - 8)/(3) * (2)/(2) = 5

(3(x + 6))/(6) - (2(x - 8))/(6) = 5

(3x + 18)/(6) - (2x - 16)/(6) = 5

(3x + 18 - 2x + 16)/(6) = 5

(x + 34)/(6) = 5

(x + 34)/(6) * 6 = 5 * 6

x + 34 = 30

x = -4

(x + 6)/2 - (x - 8)/3 = 5
Multiply each term by 6:-
3(x + 6) - 2(x - 8) = 30
3x + 18 - 2x + 16 = 30
3x - 2x = 30 -18 - 16
x = 30 - 34
x = -4 (answer)
