New Federalism- This policy revolved around shrinking the size of the federal government. Nixon wanted to give more power to the state governments. His plan was to give state governments a block of federal money. Than, the states could decide how to use this money. Before this policy, the federal government usually predetermined how the state governments should use federal money.

Southern strategy- The goal was to convert many people who were usually aligned to the Democratic party to the Republican party. Nixon planned on doing this by cutting federal social programs and playing on the fears of white citizens now that the Jim Crow laws of the past were removed.

Both of these strategies were supposed to help President Nixon win the support of Southern states.
